DigiHUD Speedometer: What Happened and the Best Alternatives

Quick answer: DigiHUD Speedometer was removed from Google Play, along with its developer account, on 17 February 2025. The developer says the last free (1.5.13) and Pro (1.1.22) versions can be downloaded only from the official DigiHUD blog. If you want a store-installed alternative with a HUD mirror mode, consider Ulysse Speedometer Pro on Android or Speedometer PRO on Android and iPhone.

What happened to DigiHUD Speedometer?

DigiHUD was a free, ad-free GPS speedometer with a mirrored head-up display mode. Its developer, James Moss, says it reached 21 million downloads after launching in 2012. On the DigiHUD blog he writes that Google removed the apps and his developer account from the Play Store on 17 February 2025, and that he's no longer maintaining the project.

He also warns that copies may have been "ripped off" and re-uploaded with ads or data-selling SDKs to other app stores. The blog keeps the last releases available:

Is it safe to sideload DigiHUD?

If you choose to install the APK yourself:

• Download it only from the official blog linked above, never from mirror sites.
• Know that it won't receive updates. Future Android versions may break it.
• Android will ask you to allow installs from that source. Turn the setting off again afterwards.
• Check the permissions it asks for: location is expected, contacts or SMS are not.

Prefer a store install if you don't want to manage updates yourself.

Worked example: replacing DigiHUD on a night commute

Alex used DigiHUD's mirrored mode on a 25-mile night commute. After switching:

• Setup (parked): install Speedometer PRO, choose mph, turn on HUD mode, and set the phone flat on a non-slip dash mat.
• Check: at a steady 50 mph on a lit road, compare the HUD with the dash. A 1-2 mph gap with the dash reading higher is normal.
• Trip data: after the drive, check trip history for distance and max speed. DigiHUD's three trip counters map to one trip meter plus saved trips.
