Quick answer: How fast am I going? Open this page on your phone, press Start and allow location. Within a few seconds it shows your current speed in MPH or KM/H using GPS, with no app or sign-up. It works in cars, buses, trains, boats and on foot, as long as the phone can see the sky.
TL;DR
- Live speed from your phone's GPS.
- Works best near a window or outdoors.
- Answers in MPH or KM/H.
- Passengers only on the road.
- Typical speeds table below for context.
Get your current speed
Press Start, allow precise location, and hold the phone still near a window. The first reading may take a few seconds while the phone gets a fix. The number then updates about once a second. If you see a dash, the device has not reported speed yet; try moving the phone closer to glass.
How fast am I going on a train or plane?
Trains often have good sky view through large windows, so speed readings are usually fine. On planes, the window seat helps, and airline rules on phone use apply; flight mode with location left on often still works because GPS only receives. See how fast is my train and airplane speed app.
Why the number jumps
GPS fixes have errors of a few metres. When the signal is reflected off buildings or partially blocked, consecutive fixes disagree and the calculated speed can spike or drop. Tunnels stop it entirely. The accuracy guide explains more.
Typical speeds for context
Rough reference values; your own will vary.
| Activity | Typical speed |
|---|---|
| Walking | 3 mph (about 5 km/h) |
| Running (recreational) | 5–7 mph (8–11 km/h) |
| Cycling (leisure) | 10–14 mph (16–23 km/h) |
| City driving | 20–35 mph (30–55 km/h) |
| Highway driving | 55–75 mph (90–120 km/h) |
| High-speed train | 125–200 mph (200–320 km/h) |
Walking and cycling figures are discussed in our walking and cycling guides.
If the reading looks wrong
Wait for a few seconds of clear sky, keep moving steadily, and check location permission is set to precise.

FAQ
How fast am I going right now?
Press Start on this page and allow location. Your phone's GPS gives a live figure within a few seconds, shown in MPH or KM/H.
Why is my speed different from the car's?
Car speedometers are designed to read at or slightly above true speed, never below. GPS often shows a slightly lower, truer figure on open roads.
Does it work underground?
No. Subways and tunnels block satellite signals, so the reading freezes or drops to zero until you resurface and the phone regains a fix.
Does it work in airplane mode?
Often yes, because GPS only receives signals and does not transmit. Some phones disable location in airplane mode, so check your settings.
Is it accurate enough for a ticket dispute?
No. It is an estimate from consumer GPS, not a calibrated instrument, and should not be used as legal evidence of your speed.
