Road trip tracker: log every leg

Written by Muneeb Rana · Last updated 26 October 2026

Quick answer: A road trip tracker logs each leg's distance, driving time, average and max speed. In Speedometer PRO, tap Start on the Current Trip card before each leg and review legs later in trip history. Pair it with the fuel cost and travel time calculators to plan. Let a passenger handle the phone.

TL;DR

  • Start a trip per leg.
  • Review in history.
  • Plan fuel costs.
  • Take breaks.
  • Passenger handles the phone.

Road trip tracker routine

Before each leg: park, start a new trip, mount the phone. At each stop: glance at the leg stats.

Breaks

Fatigue slows reactions; many road-safety bodies advise regular breaks on long drives.

Abroad

Logging legs vs one long trip

Splitting a road trip into legs makes the numbers more useful. A single 900-mile trip gives one average speed that blends motorway cruising with town traffic and a lunch stop, so it says little. Leg-by-leg records show which stretches were slow, how long each driving block really took, and where your plan was optimistic. That is the information you want when planning the return journey or the next trip on the same route.

Reading average speed honestly

Trip average speed includes every slow section, junction and queue while the trip is running. On mixed roads it is normal for the average to sit well below the speed you cruised at. If you pause the trip at stops, the average reflects driving only; if you leave it running, it reflects door-to-door progress. Decide which you want before you start, and keep it consistent so legs compare fairly.

Fatigue and breaks

The UK Highway Code (rule 91) recommends a break of at least 15 minutes after every two hours of driving, and says to stop somewhere safe if they feel sleepy. Using the trip card as a timer helps: when a leg's duration nears two hours, plan the next stop. Share driving where you can, and avoid the early-morning and mid-afternoon hours when drowsiness tends to peak.

Gaps in the record

Long tunnels, deep valleys and multi-storey car parks can interrupt GPS. The app may show a straight-line jump in distance when the signal returns, which usually underestimates a winding road. For tax or reimbursement records, compare the trip total with your vehicle's odometer at the start and end of the day.

Planning breaks

Plan stops before you set out. The UK Highway Code suggests a break of at least 15 minutes every two hours. Sharing driving and starting rested matter more than any app.

FAQ

Can the app log a whole road trip?

Yes, as separate trips or one long trip.

Does it work without signal?

GPS works offline; maps may need data.

Can I export my road trip?

Does it plan routes?

No. Use a navigation app for routing.

Does it track fuel?

No, but our fuel cost calculator estimates costs.
