Trip meter: duration, distance, average and max speed

Written by Muneeb Rana · Last updated 26 October 2026

Quick answer: The trip meter in Speedometer PRO lives on the Current Trip card. Tap Start and it counts duration, distance, average speed and maximum speed for that journey only. When you finish, the trip is stored in history, and the next trip starts from zero, much like the resettable trip A and trip B counters in a car.

TL;DR

  • Tap Start to begin a trip.
  • Shows duration, distance, average speed, max speed.
  • Finished trips go to history.
  • Independent from the total odometer.
  • Start before moving; do not tap while driving.

What the trip meter shows

  • Duration: time since you tapped Start.
  • Distance: GPS distance covered this trip.
  • Average speed: distance divided by elapsed time.
  • Max speed: the highest reading recorded this trip. Max speed is sensitive to signal glitches; a single bad fix can inflate it, so treat a surprising maximum with caution.

Average speed explained

Average speed is total distance divided by total time. If you drive 60 miles in 1.5 hours, including a 15-minute stop, your average is 40 mph even if you cruised at 55. Car trip computers often show the same kind of figure. Our average speed calculator lets you check the maths, and average speed vs max speed explains which matters when.

Trip meter uses

Planning fuel stops on a road trip, timing a commute, checking how fast a cycle loop really was, or comparing two routes. Combine the distance with the fuel cost calculator to estimate what a journey cost.

Trip meter vs car trip computer

A car's trip computer reads the same wheel sensor as the odometer and keeps counting even if your phone is off. The app counts only while it runs and measures by GPS, so the two can differ by a few percent. See trip computer for background.

Starting and stopping

Tap Start when parked, and Stop when you arrive. Leaving the trip running between journeys mixes stationary time into the averages.

What the card shows

Distance, duration, average speed and max speed for the current trip, from GPS.

Tip

Start a new trip for each journey to keep stats clean.

Good habits

Start the trip before you pull away, keep the app visible, and stop it once parked. If you forget, the trip will include the extra time, lowering your average.
